When Anders Petersen was a student at Christer Strömholm’s photo school in Stockholm 1966-68, Christer went through Anders’ contact sheets and marked a C on the few photos he could come to terms with.
“I copied several of the negatives marked with C, small strange and hard images that were really just imitations of Christer’s own. They were vulnerable, and I liked them. But they felt as if they didn’t belong to me. After some searching through the contact sheets, I was overwhelmed with all sorts of other photos, ones that neither Christer nor I had previously cared about. Perhaps the eyes become softer over the years and more forgiving. The visual perception changes and the sheets open up to a different interpretation. Not many of the C-marked images remain in this final selection.”
Afterword by Gerry Badger, who writes: “… The pictures contained here were made between 1967 and 1970 in Paris, Genoa, Stockholm and Hamburg, and many of them have been hitherto unpublished … Anders Petersen is in relatively rare company in that he can be regarded as one of the best photographic portraitists. This book can be considered yet another example of why that is undoubtedly the case …”
